I’m all in favour of making a profit, but not to the extent that you have to murder your offspring prodigy to do so…..
Kudos’ll be due if they can actually make a mint without sacrificing creativity on the altar of mass appeasement…

this sort of thing is inevitable when the individual (or individuals) that are the true creative force behind a work are disassociated in favor of insane notions like the importance of “corporate identity” and so forth. for example, disney doesn’t call their movie “Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, it’s “Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. the same sort of thing probably applies to such company’s original efforts, in that the salary-man who comes up with the original concept or the guy who designed the character of shrek and so forth are pushed into obscurity and have no say over things like marketing.
this is one reason why i like japanese comics/animation/games so much, i think. popular works of art tend to be closely associated with the original creator(s) in both a legal and social manner, and things like this usually don’t happen.
btw, quoting GUNBUSTER gives you +10 to awesome. i was at a con earlier this year, and watched some girl spend 10 dollars on a grabbag that yielded up two manga, a cd (i dunno what they were) and a vhs volume 1 of GUNBUSTER. she looked at it and was like “what’s this? 🙁 :(“, looking like she was about ready to toss it over her shoulder in disgust/disappointment. the vendor starting shaking his fist at her and preaching the virtues of mikimoto/early gainax, it was a pretty funny scene.

It’s been years since I last watched Gunbuster but that quote has always been especially potent, so I’ve never quite forgotten it…
I’d have loved to have seen what Far Future Earth was like, how advanced the people and technology would have been. That giant “welcome home” message scrawled across the planet, set off a lot of questions…
What a shame. I’m sort of in two minds about whether a second one was a good idea in the first place. Shrek was such a lovely film just as it was. Let’s just hope this isn’t going to be another “Return of Jafar” (Aladdin sequel).
